Mystery Drugs in New England?

The Pats are easy to hate, because they are great.  Just like the Yankees.  Nobody hates on crappy teams that don’t matter, just the good ones.  They have the greatest QB ever in Tom Brady.  They have the greatest coach ever in Bill Belichick.  If your not a Pats fan, you get tired of them always playing (and mostly winning) Super Bowls.

So when the news broke that Julian Edelman was suspended for 4 games, it was easy to pile on the Pats.  ‘Cheaters!’ was probably yelled over a million times throughout the US.

Of course Edelman will appeal the suspension and once again it’s a battle of the Patriots vs the NFL.  But let’s take a look at the Edelman suspension.  ESPN recently reported the NFL had suspended Edelman for 4 Games for violated the leagues substance abuse policy.  The fine print then mentioned that the NFL didn’t know what drug they had found.  Huh?  The drug was not recognized by NFL testers.

So how can you suspend somebody for using a substance that you don’t know about?  Suspended for an unknown drug? Not sure that will hold up in court, and that is where this could easily end up, remembering that the deflate-gate saga that ended in Federal Court.

Another interesting tidbit about this suspension is that there seems to have been a little Ryan Braun-ish type of situation ‘handling’ the drug test. Over the course of the investigation we learned that the NFL made mistakes in the manner in which the test results were handled.  Edelman is arguing that the NFL improperly handled his test sample and the suspension should be thrown out…  Ryan Braun got away with blaming a guy working at FedEx and got to keep his MVP.  So maybe Edelman can get a win as well, and be available for the beginning of the season.

Not having Edelman for the first 4 games would certainly hurt the Pats but we’l see if that actually happens.

Although they do play the Texans, Jags, Lions and Dolphins in the first 4 weeks.  Tommy B can probably get out of that at least 3-1 without Jules.

This would be another embarrassing L taken by the NFL if the appeal wins.
