Wow. What a weekend.
2 Overtime games. BOTH road underdogs win in OT!
Tom Brady is in the Super Bowl for the 3rd year in a row. An insane 9th Super Bowl appearance for Tommy Touchdowns.
Lets start with the first game. It looked like the Rams were rattled early and everyone is making a big deal about the crowd noise. Typically I’d dismiss the noise but it actually seemed to affect the Rams early. Goff looked very JV to start and what the hell is up with Todd Gurley? (Another example of why RBs are overrated, CJ Anderson was better that day. Not the reigning MVP) #DontPayLevBell.
Fast forward to the last 2 minutes of the game. Saints driving down inside the 20. FIRST DOWN. Sean Payton makes the worst play call of his life. Drew Brees is throwing on first down and they chose not to run the ball to force LA to burn a timeout. Brees makes an awful throw into the ground at the feet of Thomas. This is the dumbest play of the game, Sean Payton an ‘offensive genius’ doesn’t know he must run the ball there? This is Pete Carroll all over again. Rams only had 2 timeouts…. Once you blow the first playcall, hes gota keep throwing. On third down, the controversial no-call. It was blatant pass interference. It has been a year of awful officiating and game-changing calls. Why would this week be any different. We knew going into the year, the Top 3 officials (Steratore, Hochuli, and that other loser who’s on NBC games now) that were the most tenured, were all retiring. We also knew that the league had recently implemented major rule changes. You combine newer, less-experienced, young refs + more rules = bad calls all year. The extent that people are making this play the difference in the game is surprising to me. I hate bad calls, don’t get me wrong. But there were blown calls all over that game. Goffs no facemask after that puss scramble he had? No PI on Rams receivers a few times. I get the timing of this play means more. But were our expectations too high for the refs here? Maybe. Does a blown call effect the Patriots and make them lose? Or do they overcome things like this all the time and still win? Either way, yes bad call. Did it rob the Saints a Super Bowl? Challenge.
The Saints got the ball in Overtime. Why are you in that situation of throwing? Run the ball Payton! I think this bad call overshadows other parts of the game including Payton being a clown down the strech. Then Brees looking like a 40 yr old (Tom doesn’t) and throws a gross INT in OT.
Special teams was won by the Rams too. That punter (looked huge, he’s 6’5) threw a dart on the fake which was a big momentum play. How about Zuerlein? Game timing FG. Then a game winning 57 yarder? He had 10 yards on top by the way it hit that back net. What if he misses and the Saints go down and win? Too many things happened to just blame that call. Saints choked. Brees is old. Lets see what Goff/McVey has in the Super Bowl against…..
Now to Game #2. The AFC had the two best teams in the league. I think the Super Bowl might have been played in this game. Thinking the favorite of the Super Bowl was coming out of this game no matter who won.
Did anyone watching the end of that game, not think Brady was going to win? Tyreek Hill had 1 catch. Kelce had 30 yards. Brady threw for 350 and Gronk had 80. Edleman had 100. The Chiefs pass rush that just kicked the shit out of Andrew Luck, didn’t even touch Brady. ZERO sacks.
14-0 at half. It felt like the Chiefs were going to get blown out. Props to them for coming out in the second half and making it a game.
The 4th Qtr was insane in this game. FIVE TOUCHDOWNS. 38 Points. Wild scoring for a quarter. And then there was overtime. Throughout the game there were a ton of close calls that I felt for the most part were called correct. Replay overturned the Edleman muff, which looked like the right call. Hogan caught the ball and rolled, but it didnt seem to hit the ground, seemed like the right call. The Brady roughing call when they claimed he got hit in the face, that was a close but bad call. Most of the close calls went the Patriots way, but it did seem they were the correct calls on almost all of them. How about KC D-Lineman lining up off-sides on the interception that doesn’t count! How bad was that!? And despite all of this. The game goes to OT. Once the Pats win the toss, was there any doubt? The Pats are converting monster 3rd and longs throughout the whole OT drive. Gronk shows up huge. Edleman making huge catches too. Why couldn’t Brees do that? He got the ball at home!
Tommy Touchdowns in the Super Bowl again.
Wonder who’s going to be ready for that game?…
